I have made a business decision, that I am no longer involved in the day to day operations of Ugly in the North Shore. I have nothing to do with its operations or management and will no longer be in the building.

I wish Ugly the very best of luck in the future. I am sure it will continue to do great.

My name is Bubba and I have a LOST problem.
(I am addicted to the TV show Lost and it's not healthy)
Nevermind...

How long it has been since I posted.
Unfortunatly a giant black cloud has been following me around since I last posted.
How bad? (in no specific order)
My dad's in the hospital.
My wife broke her ankle.
My fire suppression system erupted causing the fire alarm to go off and sent water rushing through the basement.
My car engine blew up.
That is just a FEW things to get started.

But...no matter how low we go....we put our head down and move forward.
Baseball season has not lived up to its expectaions.
With the Pirates losing and the crappy weather the last two weeks....what can you do.
This team is too good to have this bad of a record.
They will turn it around

A guy I know just called me and gave me a heads up that a few of the UGLY bartenders have applied for jobs at another bar that is just opening up. We will see how this plays out.

There have been several UGLY staff members that have REALLY stepped to the plate. It is amazing. Good people, that want to help us and themselves. They know who they are and I am forever grateful and thankful that they are a part of the UGLY family. With everything going on in my life, it is good to know they are here.

Dave Crawley from Channel 2 is doing a piece on me tomorrow (KDKA). Radio Personality, Bar owner, husband and father of 4, softball coach, pro wrestler...must be a REALLY SLOW NEWS DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hate the fact that I just made the title to this post based on a C & C Music Factory...oh well.
I need to find time to post here....it seems like it makes for a nice release.

Well, we are only days away from Pirate season. It's funny.....that thing we call time.
It seems like just yesterday the Steelers won the Super Bowl....but yet it seems like FOREVER to get to baseball season.

I am so excited about our product.
We really are on the ball.
We are in the midst of hiring some new people to join the UGLY family.
Always a bit wierd when you add new people to the mix. We have such a cool group in the house now (Hi Tina), that when you add new people it can get tough.

For example today. Lunch was busy. But yet one person called off of work. That person calling off work took everything into complete dissaray. If that person shows up. Lunch is stellar. They do not...and things get crazy. I think teamwork is more important in the bar/restaurant industry more so than any other industry I know.

How about this for some crap.
Yesterday someone shows up to shut off our water (don't worry...it never got shut off).
Now, you might be saying...boy Bubba, you should be paying your bills. Well, I AM!!!!
You see, I pay all of my bills...but...they just realized that the people that were in this building before me had not paid their water bill since June of 2004......and according to the City Water Authority....the bill stays with whatever tenant is in the building.
IS THAT CRAZY?!?!?!?!?!?!
I had to pay someone else's water bill for 18 months before I ever even took over this building.
Someone call city council...get the mayor on the phone.......

I have a cool happy hour for Friday.

Too Much

Sometimes in the bar/restaurant industry....it's like celebrity deaths...they come in three's.
In one day. I had both printers behind the main bar crap out....and then the final shoe fell when the computer that runs the kitchen decided to stop working.
Talk about making business impossible.
Thank God for a friend of mine named Patrick who also happens to be pretty computer savy. He hasn't been able to fix the one computer...but at least we have everything working.
I just wonder if the company that sold me everything is laughing??? I will have the last laugh!

We are ready for March Madness. $2 Miller Lites for every single NCAA tourney game. Plus the Mega March Madness package.

Tomorrow is St. Patty's Day. $3 Guiness all day and night...even for the Pitt game.
While my neighbors raise their prices on big days....I want to be different. I offer drink specials....novel idea!?!

By the way....I don't think I have written about this yet. Besides being a dad, a radio guy, a bar owner...I also am a pro wrestler.
This Saturday night I am wrestling for the IWC in Elizabeth.

I need to apologize again for taking so long to post.
Dealing with my father (he is home), and sick kids, crazy wife (just kidding) my wife is the best, radio station stuff, and the weekly bar issues make posting something that slips through the cracks.

We are currently looking to hire new employees since baseball season is right around the corner. Our current staff is awesome...we just need some more good people. If you know people interested please send them my way. They must have a good attitude and want to work in a fun enviroment.

We are getting ready for March Madness. I am running $2 Miller Lites for every single NCAA March Madness game. Who can beat that deal?
I still want to get people into UGLY to check it out.
There are a lot of people that still don't know we are there.
There probably is not another bar in the city that will be running such a good special for ALL the games.

I just hope it draws a lot of people.

We are adding a couple of things to our menu here in the next couple of weeks.

Unfortunatly my father is in the hospital, so I am going to make it quick.

Thanks to all the people who came out for the Survivors for Survival event. Great to meet everyone. We raised a lot of good money for the Colon Cancer Alliance. Also a special thank you to all the Survivors that donated their time.

Sorry it has taken me such a long time to blog.
Spent the last week in Disney broadcasting for the radio station. Great time, although I need a vacation from taking a week in Disney. Waking up at 3am to do a radio broadcast followed by 8-9 hours in a park makes for a tiring week. Please don't take that as complaining. A week with my family in Disney is a lot better than anything that I could ask for.
But back to the bar.
Our chef Mick is amazing. I say that seriously. I am overwhelmed with the quality of food and cool creative ideas he puts out every single day. Bringing him on board was very fortunate for UGLY! We sell out of his homemade soups almose every single day. Plus we are adding a couple of awesome dishes to the mix. You will have to come in to check them out. I will tease you with one though: The UGLY Duckling!

We have some cool events over the next couple of weeks:

Fat Tuesday: $3 Purple Haze draft, tons of beads....Jumbalaya and Louisiana Gumbo.
Plus the kick off of Rythm and Brews. It is an open stage acoustic night. Bands that want to participate must be signed up by 8pm. Bands start performing at 9p We will be doing Rythm and Brews open stage acoustic every single Tuesday night.

Wednesday is Wild Wing Wednesday. I had no idea how big Dragon Ice Company wings were in Pittsburgh. People come out of the wood work for the wings. Plus the Worlds Hottest Wing contest at 8pm. Last week they told me that they thought they were going to have to call an ambulance for one of the contestants....now that's HOT! .33 cent wings and $2 Rolling Rock all night.

This Friday we are doing a giant happy hour. $1 any domestic draft beer from 5p -7p.

Saturday night is Survivor for Survivors. It is an charity event (open to the public) for the Colon Cancer Association. Approximately 10 people from the TV show Survivor will be in the building guest bartending. There is a $10 cover charge and all the tips and cover charge go to the Colon Cancer Association.

Well...here we are. Less than 24 hours away from the Super Bowl.
Steelers versus the Seahawks.
I spent two days in Detroit this week. No disrespect to any native Detroitians (?), but downtown Detroit is horrible. It looks like something that you would see in a war zone.
I went in to a souvenier shop that was literally crumbling. They put up pipe and draping and were sellin $35 t-shirts.

Tomorrow will be a wierd day for UGLY. It is hard to tell what to expect. I am prepared for everything.
Other than the fact that my DJ's would not work the Super Bowl....so....I got a new one. DJ Fifth Ace... it is wierd how things happen. Melanie Taylor (who you can now watch on Channel 4) and I used to work together at B94. She told me about this DJ that I had to hire at an old bar I used to do promotions for. To make a long story short...that was DJ Fifth Ace. She said he was the best DJ she had ever heard.
So from where I am sitting...we have upgraded our DJ's from this day forward.

Well...if you are looking for a place to go for the game. UGLY is that place. It is the most fun bar in the city to watch the Super Bowl....

Kimo, Fire Fighters, Pirates

Finally a Sunday to sit and do nothing...
Nice weekend down at UGLY!
Friday night Kimo Von Ohelhoffen #67 of the Steelers did an appearance at UGLY with The Miller Lite Girls.
It was a very nice turn out. The North Shore was impossible that night because of the pep rally at Heinz Field. Thanks to everyone that came out and braved the traffic and parking mess.

Last night was a very cool night....we threw an UGLY party for the Graduating Class of the Pittsburgh Fire Fighters academy. They were a GREAT group of people and really got a chance to enjoy the UGLY experience. We debuted a new DJ this weekend too.....DJ NO REQUEST! He was very good....I think people of Pittsburgh may remember him, he was the house DJ at Laga before it closed.
Thank God he was there Friday....some joker thought it was a good idea to play Hansen on the jukebox.
Jukeboxes can be great...or horrible. If someone is playing the right music....it is a lot of fun. One idiot can ruin the night....oh well....it is there for our customers...not for me. When I am playing it you will hear a lot of DMB, REM, Foo Fighters, Ludacris and Erik B. and Rakim.
Thanks to Kevin McClatchey, Chris Serkotch and gang who took over the 3rd floor for the official Pirates Fest celebration for staff and players.
What a great time. Our chefs really out did themselves this weekend.
I am so glad that the Pirates and UGLY have forged such a good relationship so early in our existence. They are a great group of people that work harder than most people will ever know.
I am SUPER excited for the SUPER BOWL....but I am SO excited about this upcoming baseball season. It is going to be a fun summer with the Pirates and UGLY!
We are closed tomorrow (MONDAY), there just doesn't seem to be enough business on Monday's to make it worth opening. I would love to be open 7 days a week. But I am also a realist. If there is enough business...I will be open....if not....between waking up at 3:30am and working all day and night....I think my body needs a rest every now and again.

I am fully entrenched in Super Bowl Steeler Fever.
So is UGLY.
Friday night Kimo Von Oehlhoffen #67 of YOUR Pittsburgh Steelers will be guest bartending at UGLY starting at 9pm!
I hope we have a better turn out then we did for the Black and Gold pep rally last week.
I am advertising it like crazy....we will see.
This week has been very hit or miss. Lunch yesterday was slow...the food was still great, just not enough customers! Last night we had a great wing night.....I am telling you. Our wings are the BEST in the city. No questions asked.
We have the graduating class of the Pittsburgh Firefighters academy at UGLY Saturday night.
We are doing our best to help the city every way that we can.

I am very happy with our new Chef....his name is Mick....or you can call him Mickey.
He is unbelievably creative, and has taken what I considered to be great food to a whole new level.
We are already meeting on what we are going to add to the menu this spring.
I am just excited to meet people that come in for the first time. They really seem to love the place.......

Gotta run, unfortunatly my mother in law is under the weather...say a prayer if you get a moment. (they never hurt ya know)

I'm expecting a good weekend this weekend.
It looks like our UGLY Black and Gold Pep Rally is going to be a huge success.
I am looking all over for Bar stools for the 3rd floor. I never realized there was such a shortage?
I am overwhelmed by the response that I have recieved from people that read this.
I never thought???
I just thought this would be a great way to document my voyage through the bar/restaurant business.
The responses have ranged from...fun and interesting to unprofessional. I don't think I understand the last critique?
We had a very nice write up in the Post Gazette yesterday.....that mystery critic "The Muncher" stopped by this past Saturday....and really liked it.
That is what I have been saying the whole time. Have great service and good food and the people will come!
Steelers versus the Bronco's on Sunday. 3pm. $1 draft beer at kick off.
We open at 11am....make sure you get there early!
Tonight is going to be sick!!!

What a game...what a game!

Let me start by saying that I know that I take Pittsburgh Steeler Football TOO seriously...but now that my business is derived from the success and failure of the Steelers...it is WAY OVER THE TOP!

UGLY was without question the best place in the city to watch the game. I don't know how to explain it. There was a karma, a vibe, an electricity that I have never felt before. I never felt it at Sports Rock, when I consulted there, and I never felt it at Hi Tops.

It was truly an UGLY game! The people there were just a blast. It was TOO cool to see all those girls spontaneously jump on the bar and start dancing after the missed field goal to Kool and The Gang's "Celebration". Now don't get me wrong, that is probably one song I would tell my DJ (Herbie), to NEVER play....but somehow, someway, it sounded different and worked.

This week will be the same. I am going to open up the 3rd floor. I am a superstitious guy (boy do I have hang ups), so I hope everyone that came last week comes this week. Plus brings a ton of their friends.

I can't tell you enough how cool of a place UGLY was on Sunday!

This week I am having Wild Wing Wednesday. .33 cent wings and $2 Rolling Rock. We had a guy last night who thought he could handle our "Chasin the Devil" sauce....he was able to eat two wings....and was hurtin'. These things are NUTS HOT!

Friday @ 5pm, I am having an UGLY Black and Gold Pep Rally! $1 Coors Light from 5p - 7p.
Plus I am going to get a big prize to give away that night to one lucky person wearing Black and Gold......

Wow.....back to the grind stone tomorrow.

I hope everyone took some time out of their day today to appreciate the words and sacrafice of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Watching his "I have a dream" speech with my daughters was amazing. Remember that we need to love each other no matter what color our skin is, what religion we practice or what we believe.

Happiest Hour

What a long day!
We had a couple of artists stop by today that are interested in displaying and selling art here at UGLY! I really need to get moving on that. We need to get some stuff up on the walls.
Great Happy Hour today.
We did a Black and Gold Happy Hour.
Great crowd.
The people from Mellon came over. It was very nice to meet them. They gave me some GREAT suggestions for the bar. They HATED my back page print ad in the E Resource paper. I have to agree. They made some really good points.
It's funny, I really need feedback. Good or Bad. If everyone tells me that everything is great and fine when it is not....UGLY will never get better.
That is NOT what I want. I need truthfullness. So, when people give me their honest opinion, it feels good. Because good or bad....it helps me make UGLY better.
So thank you to the Mellon people that were so nice and honest for me.
I am fired up for the game Sunday. Steelers upset the Colts!
I really feel like UGLY was the best place in the city to watch the game.
We had so much fun!

What a fun weekend!
This restaurant / bar business is a tough one.
I think UGLY, is going to be one of the best bars in the city!
It is just a day and night job. When you have a vision you expect others to see it, and when they don't do things that fit into your vision, it get's frustrating. Maybe I need to be more patient? I would guess the problem is mine.
There is no question that UGLY is the most fun bar in the city to watch Steeler football.
The people that were at UGLY today to watch us CRUSH the Bengals surely would agree.
It's just sometimes frustrating to watch people line up next door (no names mentioned) and pay a ton of money when they can come GET UGLY!
UGLY had $1 draft beers at kick off.....you can't get any cheaper than that to watch the game at a bar.
Plus our food has become so good. I know that I am biased, but that is the feedback we are getting.
Every week we work hard to have a better product. And I know we will continue to get better and better.
I feel confident now promoting the business. Now I know that we will produce and live up to the expectations of our clientele.

Happy Holidays from UGLY!

Happy Holiday's from us at UGLY.
We shut down the bar Saturday, Sunday and today.
We will open up at 8pm for a giant reality show party
They will be watching the Road Rules v. Real World Challenge tonght.
Tim Beggy (who actually is on the show) will be there.
Suzie Meister (also on the show).
Ian Rosenberger from Survivor.
Jenna Morasca from Survivor.
Ethan Zahn from Survivor.

A couple of radio stations promoted the event, so hopefully there will be a good turn out.
I put an ad out for artists on Craigslist.
I want to decorate the bar / restaurant with original artwork and have the artwork for sale.
I got a ton of responses....which sort of surprised me.

Artists can display and sell their artwork on the walls at UGLY!
We will become a bar/restaurant/art gallery.....

remember....you need to ALWAYS think outside the box.....

Decisions

Let me start by wishing everyone Happy Hanukwanzahindumas! (that should cover everyone).
Another crazy day at UGLY. I have to get rid of one of the staff...the worst I have ever seen. I will wait til after Christmas.
Another crazy day....busy for lunch, happy hour, then late for a big post Holiday party party. (whatever that means).
My manager Brian (who used to own the Dragon Ice Co. - which is why we have the best wings in the world) got me all fired up yesterday. He got me all pumped up! We have decided to lower our drink prices. My old manager (no longer with us...not dead...just not employed by UGLY) talked me into higher drink prices. You see, in the bar industry everything is based on liquor percentage! The higher you charge for drinks, the better the percentage.
BUT, the higher the drink prices the less frequent return you get on customers.
Lower drink prices...the less you make, but the better return on guests!
I am in this business for the long run. I am born and raised in Pittsburgh, so I want this to be a Pittsburgh bar....and I never want a customer to walk out thinking they paid too much for a drink.
So.....starting Monday....our drink prices will go down!
I am debating on whether to open Monday or not? Any suggestions?
I think it would be better to give my UGLY family the day off....

By the way....Chef Darrell makes the best lunch features...yesterday he made a bourbon mollasses (sp?) steak sandwitch....crazy good.

I hope tonight is busy. We are doing .50 cent Captain Morgan's and .50 Miller Lites. We actually lose money on every single Captain drink we sell. We need to get our name out there and make an impact....so hopefully it works.

New Years Eve....we just decided to do a huge Steak dinner....Black Angus Delmonico's...you get the idea.......plus no cover and $3 drinks.

This is a great business....

By the way I did my first stand up comedy last night at the Improv. People laughed...that's a good thing!

Oh the difference a few hours make. If you read my blog from early this morning (yes I get up at 3am and don't get to bed til after 11pm or so), you read that the bar/restaurant business is slow this time of year, especially on the North Shore.
I left the radio station (WZPT Star 100.7) and went down to the bararound 10:30a. Of course one of my bartenders no showed, so I put a rookie behind the bar....what a mistake.
Then it happened.
A group came in....then another and another and another....the next thing you know every seat in the building is full and so is the bar.
That is when owning a bar is the most fun and the most stressful. You know you have less than one hour to get a great meal in front of every person and have them, sat, fed and out the door and back to work with a very positive experience.
Easy enough???
I wish!
I was a bartender, a barback, a food runner, an expeditor, a busboy and a host and greeter all in that one hour.
We made it....no major problems...a couple of mistakes here in there, but for the most part I feel it went smoothly.
But that was not the end....from there we had about an hour down time...and it started all over again.
We had a small party from Alcoa that came by. The really had some great food and a good time...and the people started piling in again.
We really had a nice happy hour of people that work on the North Shore.
It's funny...we have not even advertised our food yet. Everybody that is coming in is saying that they are coming in via positive reccomendations from co-workers etc.
Our food really is that good....I just never thought it would take off this quickly.
You see, we don't even have a freezer in our building. Therefore everything we make is from scratch and homemade. Nothing EVER frozen. Fresh deliveries every single day.
Scott Tady from the Beaver County Times came by to check the place out. Hopefully he enjoyed everything and will give us a good write up???
I put every single dollar I have in the world in this place....I need all the help I can get.
What will tomorrow bring???
Who knows???

All I know is that I will be wearing many hats regardless of what the day may bring.
Oh....and by the way....if you are near the Waterfront tomorrow night....I am doing stand up comedy for the first time ever at the Improv starting at 8pm.

Keeping Busy

Well,
It's the Wednesday before Christmas. Things are somewhat slow down at UGLY!
Everyone is either on vacation or shopping. Friday should be good though. $1 Coors Lights for happy hour and 50 cent Captain Morgan's and Miller Lite's for FUBAR Friday night!

Just planned an awesome New Years Eve Party.....won't make people pay a cover charge to get in the door.....then charge $3 for drinks.....that should be great....plus a private party already booked on the third floor with Trenni and Liz.......

Jerome Bettis stopped in Monday night to watch some Monday night football. He kept promising he would stop by....but of course when he finally did, I was not there.

Monday nights have become cool. Tim Beggy (Road Rules) and his Road Rules posse watch the show every Monday night. So, fans of the show can watch on TV the people that they are watching on TV????(I am confusing myself).

I need to find some artists to help decorate my place.....I would love the place to become an bar/restaurant/art gallery......

It really has that feel to it....

Eat Drink Get UGLY!

Well, It's open. UGLY. A brand new bar on the North Shore of Pittsburgh.
Our slogan is: Eat. Drink. Get UGLY!
It has taken a lot of years, a lot of learning, a lot of mistakes (if you don't believe me ask my wife), but now I think I have opened the coolest bar/restaurant in the city of Pittsburgh.
The decor (although not complete) is very inudstrial. A girl was there for happy hour on Friday and said: This has a New York City feel with an L.A. name.
Our food is great. There is no freezer, so all the food has to be delivered fresh every day!
Chef Darrell has really put together a fun menu. It has all the bar staples, like burgers and chicken fingers, but that really is not what this menu is all about.
We have homemade wing sauces that are the best I have ever tried. In fact we are constantly getting feed back that "These are the best wings ever". Thus the birth of Wednesday Wing Night. Plus we have the hottest wings in the world. They are made from imported Red Sevena peppers. No one has been able to eat more than four.
VooDoo Chicken, Big UGLY Wet Burrito (our best seller), for all the vegans out there we have an great grilled vegetable sandwitch. The menu is huge.
Of course there are always bumps in the road, but you go over them and manage them. For example....four weeks and I still don't have a sign outside.
I will keep you up to date on the fun, trials and tribulations of the crazy bar/restaurant industry.
The very cool thing is this....what other business can you throw a party every single night?
